This is absolutely unacceptable
My mother’s surgery was scheduled for 10:00 AM. we were greeted by Sonia and Jennifer, who provided excellent care. However, from that point forward, our experience deteriorated significantly. • My mother was not taken into surgery until 3:00 PM - 5 hours after her scheduled time • At 2:00 PM, I had to personally seek out an update, at which point I was informed that the surgeon had just completed his first case and would be coming shortly. • At 6:00 PM, we still had not received any update about my mother’s condition. I had to pick up the hospital phone in the waiting area to call PACU myself. The nurse who answered seemed surprised and said, “Oh my God, she’s out. Did the doctor not call you?” This was the first I was hearing that she was even out of surgery. • At 6:20 PM, the dr called to tell us my mother was doing well and would be out within 30 minutes. • At 7:00 PM, I called PACU again after no one contacted us. The nurse assured me she was awake and would be discharged within 30 minutes. • At 7:30 PM, I called again when no one had come to get her. Again, I was told she was “getting ready” for discharge. • At 8:00 PM, I called PACU yet again, and this time, I was finally told that my mother was actually struggling—she was not waking up, her oxygen was at 86-87, and she was not breathing properly. This was in direct contradiction to the previous reassurances I had received. • The nurse I spoke to at 8:00 PM was extremely rude and dismissive. When I requested for my dad and I to see my mother, she said, “I don’t know who ‘we’ is, but I can let one of you back there maybe. There is no ‘we.’” • When I was finally allowed to see my mother, I was horrified by what I saw. She was lying in an uncomfortable, contorted position - her legs were spread in opposite directions, her head was tilted one way, and her shoulders another. She was visibly uncomfortable and completely neglected. • My mother kept trying to communicate that she had to use the restroom, but the nurse ignored her needs. When I asked why she wasn’t being given oxygen despite her low oxygen levels, the nurse’s response was, “She’s not turning blue, so there’s no reason to put oxygen on her.” Does she need to code before we take action? • My mother later told me that the nurse had been aggressively pushing and hitting her arm to try to wake her up. She repeatedly complained of severe arm pain, yet this was ignored. • My mother repeatedly said she needed to use the restroom. Instead of helping her, the nurse ignored her, and my mother ended up urinating on herself. • When she was finally taken to the bathroom, the nurse told me to press the red button when we were done. However, after everything we had experienced, I was so frustrated and concerned for my mother’s well-being that I decided to wheel her out myself. • When the nurse saw me wheeling her out, she laughed in my face and made sarcastic comments to another staff member. • At 9:30 PM, I again requested that she stay overnight due to her ongoing breathing issues. My request was denied, and I was told she would be “just fine” by the same nurse. Finally at 9:30pm another nurse wheeled her out and told me “next time ask for her to stay overnight instead of getting discharged” are you kidding me? The whole time I requested for her to stay the night” We arrived home at almost 10:30pm because she was discharged so late! The whole time when we got home my mom was crying of arm pain and kept saying the nurse kept hitting her arm telling her to breathe! Terry from pt relations decided to finally call after a month and had every excuse in the book. she had a reason for everything but when questioned regarding it all you heard were crickets because she knew she was wrong. We received a letter in the mail yesterday stating nothing was done wrong and case is closed. It is ok our attorneys will be handling it now since you guys did not.
