The Truth about U.S.A. Hospitals Performance
The Commonwealth Fund published in its "Mirror, Mirror" article that USA healthcare ranked dead last when compared to 11 other developed nations. The USA ranked last place in areas of access to care, administrative efficiency, equity, and healthcare outcomes. Despite spending far more on healthcare than other high-income nations, the U.S. scored poorly on many key health measures including: preventable hospital admissions, postoperative complications, and maternal mortality. While coming in last place is horrible in itself (for a country that claims to have the best healthcare system in the world), it is the sheer number of lives that are affected that really matters. Imagine if two jumbo jets with seats filled to capacity crashing, killing everyone on board. Every single day. The equivalent happens from medical error deaths every day in the good ole USA. Each year, an estimated quarter of a million Americans (estimate 250,000 - 440,000) die from medical errors.
