There needs to be accountability
I had hernia surgery on October 17th 2025 with an arrival time of 1:36pm at the Phoenix Mayo Clinic Hospital. It was an excellent experience until I got toI recovery. I had been told that this was an outpatient procedure so I was expecting to go home after the surgery. I had a driver lined up to take me back to my house. In recovery I was told by the recovery nurse named Cheryl that I needed a person to stay with me for 24 hours after surgery. I told Cheryl that the Mayo Clinic message portal had a message for me saying that this is recommended and it did not say required. I had taken a screen shot of the portal message stating this and offered to show her but she did not have any interest in seeing it. Because it is recommended and not required I did not have a person setup to stay with me. She said that I can’t go home and would need to stay in the hospital overnight. I told her that I do not have a driver for the next day and I clearly stated to her that I did not want to stay overnight but she continued to ignore my wishes. She then said that I needed the pain medication and my pharmacy is closed. Of course it was closed by this hour and you would have thought that given the late start for the surgery that a prescription would have been made available to me a day or two before so I would have it when I was released but no one at the Mayo Clinic thinks that far ahead. She then told me that if I leave the hospital now that my insurance would not cover me. I discovered later that this was a blatant lie. As a result of all of these claims I acquiesced and stayed the night in the Mayo Clinic Hospital. I spent the next 11 hours staring at the ceiling in my hospital room. My last meal was 38 hours earlier so I asked about using the cafeteria but was told that it was closed. I was so angry because of all the lies that I was told in recovery not to mention that I was extremely hungry and that I was not able to sleep. I never once took any of the pain medication while I was waiting the 38 hours because my pain level was at a 3 and I did not see the need to take an opioid. Also, I have not even picked up the prescription medication from CVS that nurse Cheryl said was so important for me to have. She painted this doom and gloom scenario of not having the pain medication. She also equated me leaving to a cop letting a drunk driver continue driving home. This made absolutely no sense to me because I had a driver waiting for me outside to take me home. My desire was to go home from this outpatient procedure but my wishes were continually ignored. I consider what was done to me by the Mayo Clinic as false imprisonment. Don't waste your time complaining to the Mayo Clinic Office of Patient Experiences because they will just sweep your complaint under the rug and tell you their actions were out of an abundance of caution. That is what I was told by a person named Jacinda in that office. She totally ignored the reasons for my complaint. I requested to go home and the doctor said that we can't hold you. The nurse named Cheryl in recovery told 3 different lies to keep me there and Jacinda from the Office of Patient Experience totally ignored that part of my complaint. The Mayo Clinic will never admit that their staff did anything contrary to the patients wishes.

It’s been a month now and we never heard back from the Mayo clinic
We have been through so many doctors for my husband’s nerve damage which he is in pain 24/7 so we tried the mayo and what a waste of time and money. First of all when the doctor came in the room, he looked at my husband and said what do you want? What are you seeking for? And of course we said we are seeking for help because he is in so much pain due to nerve damage and we need help! My husband has never had a prescription in his life!! and then when we were being released, they said the pain management and neurologist would get back to us right away that the Mayo is very good at following up. We are now being treated by a doctor in the honor health system and he is finally got some relief thanks to the honor health system.

Worse hospital experience ever
The teams we have worked with have been dreadful a gastroenterologist was going to do a test wrong which is why we left, I told her she was going to do it wrong and she even admitted she was wrong then gave me a scientific explanation on why I was right. Then the billing related issues I had to deal with was unbelieveable. They don't except my insurance even though every major hospital in my home town did. Then when I had to get itemized bills they screwed up multiple times as well, I had to call to have them take off discounts that should of already been taken off and they never verified my address to be a real place so I never got any statements. The other hospital we ended up going helped us in all capacities no questions asked.

She was scheduled for an angiogram until they realized she had Medicare
My 85 year old mother was referred here with an episode of congestive heart failure. I work in healthcare and it was against my better judgement that she get referred to Mayo. She required a thoracentesis for hypoxia which she didn’t get until 12 hours after her admission. A day after her episode the case manager told her she wasn’t covered and could be transferred. My mother asked that they call her physician son (and they had my number to contact me) but the case manager was ‘too busy’ to call me. The cardiologist also didn’t call me despite meeting me and having my number. My mother was then discharged discharged the next morning with out notifying any family about the discharge. I know there are realities to health care and compensation for services. A 5 min phone call would’ve been helpful and kind. This was a total bush league experience. I would encourage anyone in Phoenix with healthcare issues to go to HonorHealth

Mayo Clinic acts like a healthcare factory
Absolutely terrible experience. They rush you in and out without actually listening or caring about you as a patient. The doctors barely spend time with you, and there’s no depth to the care. It feels transactional and cold. To make things worse, they slap you with outrageous bills for minimal effort. I’ll never go back.

Don’t think we will be using Mayo Clinic from now on
I took my daughter to the ED as she had been in severe abdominal pain. She has several ongoing GI issues. She just turned 18 and we were hoping that the adult ED would help her with the pain. However, this is not what happened. The doctor refused to run any tests other than blood and urine. She refused to give her pain medication, and said she would refers her to a GI “but don’t expect to be seen for several months “. She was unprofessional and down right rude.

Please do not donate to Mayo
Even though Mayo has one of the few experts in my uncommon cancer in the entire state of Arizona, and even if my insurance approves my provider's prior authorization request, I was just informed by an employee of Mayo that I would still have to pay $5000 for an initial consultation. Please make sure your $$$ goes to research that actually helps everyone who needs it. They claim non-profit but most of us, even those paying hundreds a month for medical insurance, can't get in the door.

I loved mayo at first until ER sent me home and I went sepsis
I recently went to ER again and just viewed my result....I am a heart failure patient with chronic UTI's. My Troponin's were high and bacteria in my urine. They sent me home saying I was fine. My b/p was also low. I was very fatigued. I no longer have faith concerning my health with Mayo.
