I felt violated, dismissed, and powerless
I am writing this to share my experience at University hospital Newark, NJ, even though some time has passed, because it continues to affect me deeply and I want to help ensure this doesn’t happen to others. I arrived at the hospital in an ambulance for my delivery. From the very beginning, the staff including nurses and doctors were cold, dismissive, and at times outright rude. I was treated with little compassion or dignity during one of the most vulnerable moments of my life. What hurt me the most was that I had clearly stated in writing and verbally that I did not want my newborn to receive any vaccines. Despite this, a nurse entered my room and gave my baby a vaccine without informing or asking me. I was in an emotional, physically exhausted state and unable to advocate for myself in that moment but that does not mean my wishes should have been ignored. No parent should have to go through something like this especially not during childbirth. Hospitals should be places of safety, compassion, and respect for patient autonomy. I sincerely hope this feedback leads to serious reflection and policy change.

Everything here is very hit or miss
If you're coming here looking for highly trained doctors and nurses with good bedside manners, you will be disappointed. This place is loud, chaotic, violent, and even dangerous at times. It's exactly that you would imagine a Newark trauma hospital to be. The problems here run deep due to bad attitudes, combative staff, lack of patient care or well-being, and just straight up having no respect for their job. I've found myself waiting for an hour to get a response to an emergency call button press while nurses chat and giggle just out of ears' reach. I've had some test takers be very gentle and caring while others toss and bend you without hesitation or reguard for your cries of pain. I've told a dozen doctors about my medication requirements, watched them all take pictures of the notes to get the orders right, only to leave and ignore them day after day--each saying it's not their area. Nobody wants to be responsible for anything that goes wrong. There are a handful of younger doctors and nurses that do listen and care. For them, I hope they find themselves someplace better to plan their career.

Waiting is terrible in this emergency room
Bleeding terribly from rectal fissure for four hours in emergency room and still not seen, took a trip 7 minutes out to st Michael's and got seen immediately. Definitely University needs to figure it out and let folks know who are bleeding out that they have other options. Thank God for the Security Officer who made the suggestion, she's a life saver

Don't go to this hospital even if you're on your death bed
From the security to the ER to the SICU every nurse, doctor and front counter associate doesn't care about anything that's going on with you, as they tend to their own private conversations. My family and I were involved in a rollover accident, my wife was the injured victim my baby and I were separated from her and was there from 6pm-1am, and nobody knew where she was claiming they could not find her name in the system anywhere. I know she was there because that's where the ambulance told me they were going while I caught the next ambulance ride there from the crash sight. My baby did not have any diapers or food accept graham crackers I had in my pocket, all of our stuff including phones were lost in the accident, they kicked me and my 1 year old son out on the street after not even finding my wife. Also we are not from Jersey or any surrounding areas, we did not have anywhere to go and we did not hear from or find my wife until the next day coming back to the ER and telling them of their horrible services and losing their patients in the system.

My son in at 34 has pressure areas due to neglect and poor care.
This is the worst hospital I am aware of. The staff that cares for him was unaware of the areas until my daughter brought it their attention and even then the nurse had no idea what she was looking at. I will be raising these issues up the chain even if I have to contact the insurance company, CMS, Joint Commission and any other regulatory body that will listen. Same on those who call themselves Healthcare professionals at this hospital.

Do not go here!
Long waits, dirty, no mask, nurses don’t know what they’re doing, horrible service, no communication.
