I used to think Vanderbilt was top notch. Not anymore.
I was admitted to the observation floor on 5/14 around 3am, with 2 small brain bleeds and a small maxillary sinus fracture due to a fall. The room some what large had 8-10 beds, separated by curtains, around it's perimeter and only 1 restroom! There were no call lights, no phone, no tv, and to turn the overhead lights off or on I had to get out of bed and flip the switch. If you need a nurse you had to.yell out for help! Every time a department came to discuss my case they asked for full name and date of birth, where everyone could hear (HIPPA Violation). at 7am that morning a construction crew, within 50 ft from my bed, down the hall were hammering. I sent a report. Even if the floor was under construction, it was a poor setup.

I will never recommend this Hospital to anyone
It is a money grubbing business that is incompetent . I had many numerous encounters with them and I am embarrassed it took me so long to figure it out. Save your life and your money and a lot of headaches and please inform yourself as much as possible and don't just take their word for what they say is what is best for you. Always get second opinions and always keep an eye on what they charge you. Do not be afraid to stand up for yourself, you know yourself better than anyone!

Vanderbilt hospital is a joke
If I could give this hospital a 0 I would. I was recently pregnant and found out in November at my 20 week scan the our sweet baby girl was diagnosed with a fatal condition called anencephaly. My OB transfered me to Vanderbilt given that this pregnancy would be considered more high risk. Due to increasing amniotic fluid levels, I ended up being induced a month earlier than expected. I went in for my induction on 2/19/25. All my nurses were great and we had one resident we really liked but the rest of the doctor's/CNM's were awful and treated my baby like she did not matter. Since I was being induced at 33 weeks my body was fighting the induction. They decided to break my water on 2/20 but never went over the risks. I truly feel like after they broke my water, my baby did not survive long after. Hours later they came in to check on me and baby and at 2:30 AM on 2/21 we were told that our sweet GraceLynn Jane had passed away. At that time I was only dilated to 4cm. Anytime I mentioned a C-section I was immediately turned down by the providers. Once my baby passed it seemed like no one cared even more. I only had a nurse check on me a couple times to take my temp to make sure I wasn't getting an infection ( which they once again did not go over the risks with me) since they decided to leave my baby in me for so long after she passed. It wasn't until 11:30 AM that a doctor even came to check on me and that was only because we asked to speak to someone. Once again a C-section was mentioned and I was turned down again. I eventually gave birth to my sweet girl at 1:37 PM. By that time she was left inside me for at least 11 hours but was more than likely longer than that. When she came out she was so deteriorated and purple and we did NOT get to spend the amount of time with her that we should have been able to. There was no reason that they should have left her in me for so long once she had passed. Vanderbilt completely failed my daughter and myself. To go in already knowing she would pass was already devastating but to then on top of that be treated like she didn't matter because of her diagnosis is absolutely disgusting. I have spoken with someone with patient relations and SURPRISE! That has seemed to have gone NOWHERE. These providers need to do better and be better! We trusted you to take care of us and our baby and you majorly let us down.

My mom had 9 causes of death on her autopsy report...all things she acquired here
My mom had surgery to have a cyst removed and after 10 more surgeries in 17 days she passed away. They cut something internally and couldn't ever fix it. 140 units of blood they gave her. She had 9 causes of death on her autopsy report...all things that she acquired in her 17 days there. Things happen I know but I did not like the way this was handled at all and 90% of the staff agreed. It deeply impacted my entire family for life.

We love VUMC, but will never return to the ED
My husband is a stem cell cancer patient. We love the stem cell clinic staff. This review is ONLY about the Emergency Department. My husband has a very suppressed immune system going through a transplant. We went to the ER with severe back pain this afternoon. After sitting in the hallway as far away from all the sick coughing people as we could get for FOUR HOURS without so much as any bloodwork being done, we left. They knew his immune deficient status and that he is a cancer patient, but that didn’t matter. After four hours, I inquired as to how much longer it would be, she said that there were people there who had already been waiting more than six hours and she could not tell me how much longer it would be. When I told her we could not stay any longer and be exposed to so many germs, she seemed indifferent and just said ok. I think she was glad we were leaving because it would be one less patient to deal with. They are overwhelmed and understaffed. Choose any other emergency room but this one.

Have to pay an unjust bill to keep my credit rating secure
You will get CHARGED as much billing as they can possibly code for a visit, and they are not interested in re-coding something even when you pose a legitimate complaint. The doctor would not consider talking about it with me. I had to work with billing, Cigna, billing, Vandy patient affairs, the charge nurse of the Hillsboro unit - all to no avail. I'm done with Vanderbilt

40 hours on the phone with Vanderbilt University billing to contest billing mistakes
I spent more than 40 hours on the phone with Vanderbilt university billing this year to contest billing mistakes. Their system is antiquated and they are in serious need of a new manager! I realize that I have dual insurance and that sometimes that can be confusing but on the cards I put primary and secondary in marker to make it easier for the billing department. However, either the employees for Vanderbilt don't care or are overwhelmed. I place the blame on management of the department and management in every position above them for not stepping in to fix the problems. If they can't correct the billing department I will be moving to another hospital system for my care!! I received a call from Vanderbilt billing today and the supervisor had to leave a message. She left the main number and her first name to call her back. What she should have done was leave her direct call back number and her first and last name. AGAIN WHERE IS MAGAGEMENT AND TRAINING? I called back and requested a call back due to wait times on the phone. When the call came there was no one on the on the line and I had to call back and request another call back. When that call came they had to search for the supervisor and then she could not reach her. ANOTHER 40 MINUETS LOST DO TO POOR TRAINING AND NO SUPERVISION. WHO IS RUNNING THE BILLING DEPARTMENT AND WHY IS VANDERBIL NOT INVESTIGATING THE LOSS OF REVENUE DUE TO BILLING MISTAKES??

Don’t worry we won’t be back.
I have never in my life met such a rude staff at a health center. The hospital has postings all around about how they will not put up with rude patients. Yet they do not follow the same expectations they have set for the people they are “healing”. They don’t seem to have time to sit and talk to patients and their families. You are treated like a box to check off a list. I’m not sure whose pockets they lined to get such a high rating but it’s most definitely not a top hospital. Or a hospital I would refer ANYONE to. The ER staff is annoyed you are alive and within 100 ft of them. And they don’t mind showing it in their faces. It blows my mind because if the tables were reversed, they would be just as disguised as I am. My husband came here to heal. I’m sorry our tragedy is your inconvenience. I’m sorry doing the job you chose as a career (to heal people) is such a pain in your ass.

I hate that my mom's end of life experience was so traumatic and miserable
My mom was in desperate need of a lung transplant and told them at her appointment that she was interested in getting one. It took them five months to call her to start the testing. During that time my mom and dad were calling and telling them that they wanted to move forward. They forgot to have my mom and dad sign that my dad could call and ask info about her, so they wouldn't even speak to my dad. During those five months, my mom's health drastically declined. They had my mom go through two weeks of grueling tests to determine if they would accept her. She gave it her all! After all of that, they rejected her. The transplant surgeon (not the director) was a complete jerk and even made my dying mother cry. She had severe PTSD from this experience and had nightmares until she died. When we told Vanderbilt this, they said that was "normal." After she died we called them and wanted to discuss our experience and were told that they would get back with us. They never did. I hope in the future you will treat your lung transplant patients and their families with more sensitivity and kindness than was shown to us.
