The best part of my entire experience was leaving.
I went to Candler Hospital on 9/20/24 for a Nissan fundoplication and it was an interesting experience. Registration was fine, it was everything after that. My initial nurse blew out one vein in my left hand and had to do it again in the right hand. Then she forgot to draw blood for labs and messed that up too. It wasn’t until I was wheeled off to surgery that I felt more comfortable with the team. This, unfortunately, only lasted until I woke up from surgery. From that point (approximately noon) until about 7pm, I only saw 2 people. I requested help to use the restroom for the first time after surgery and no one came. About an hour later I saw someone in the hallway and asked if they could help me. Begrudgingly she came in. Next up was food service. This young woman came in, didn’t say two words, put down the tray and left. There was not help to move the tray so I could eat it. Based on my earlier experience, I wasn’t going to call anyone, they wouldn’t come. I was so frustrated with the lack of attention I was in tears. Since I figured I was on my own, up I got attached to too many things to try and move the tray and adjust it so I could eat. I ended up falling in the process but everything seemed to be ok. Not sure if anyone would have come in anyway. It wasn’t until the night staff came on that I actually saw anyone and, by then, it was time to just sleep.
Throw on top of all of this, I had to educate the nursing staff on what I could and could not consume. No ice water, no straws, no caffeine, the list goes on. I am perplexed that the staff would not have those type of notes in my chart based on the procedure I just had done. The next morning wasn’t much better. When my doctor asked how I felt and if I felt well enough to go home, I could not say ‘Yes’ fast enough. Of course, the nurse had no clue that I could be released and she brought me my thyroid medication shortly after I ate. Just sigh! I’m thinking people do not communicate or bother to read charts. Also, anyone with thyroid issues knows to not take their medication with food and I had brought my own as I am responsible for me and no one told me I shouldn’t. If I could give negative stars, I would. Just the most horrendous experience that I now get to pay for.
